Navigator's Study Hall

Welcome to the Navigator’s Study Hall

This is your home base for Catching Life’s Currents: A 14-Week Guideposts Journey — and it’s always here when you need it.

You’ll find a link to this page in the footer of every Navigational Nudge that arrives in your inbox. You’ll also find a link on the main menu of the Navigating a Whackadoodle World home page. We strongly encourage you to bookmark it or add it to your favorites so it’s never more than a click away.

What everyone receives:

Every Sunday a Weekly Navigational Nudge will arrive in your inbox automatically. Each Nudge is a short story designed to inspire you, inform you, and hopefully brighten your day — as well as prime you for that week’s Guidepost. Midweek Nudges are also sent from time to time, and all past Nudges are available in the archive whenever you’d like to explore them.

All fourteen lessons are available to you now, right here in Navigator’s Study Hall. While you are welcome to move through them at your own pace, we strongly recommend spending a full week with each Guidepost before moving on. There is a lot there — and it deserves the time.

If you are traveling with a group, one-on-one, or as a Beta Navigator:

You will receive a second email each week — arriving after your Sunday Nudge — containing your direct lesson link and the Zoom link for that week’s live session. Replays of recorded sessions will be posted here in the relevant week’s block after our meetings and will never be shared publicly.

Special notice to Beta-Navigators: Recordings may be used in future course refinements. Your feedback is invaluable and deeply appreciated.

How you use this space will match the way you’re traveling:

  • Private Navigators will use this page alongside our one-on-one personalized sessions.

  • Group Navigators will find the same weekly materials here to support our live and recorded gatherings.

  • Self-Study Navigators can move through the weeks entirely at their own pace.

  • Beta-Group Navigators will follow the same weekly flow as our group navigators, while helping refine the course through shared experience and feedback.

A Quick Note Before You Dive In — a few things worth knowing about how this course works, and more importantly, how you can get the most out of it.

IMPORTANT: This is not a course you can sit down and finish in one sitting per week—in fact none of these lessons will ever really be complete. Instead, you will want to revisit them again and again…

Each lesson is a deep dive — deliberately, intentionally, and lovingly so. The Guideposts have been taught and refined over decades, and each lesson contains enough material to genuinely change how you see the world if you let it. That takes time. It takes percolation. It takes living with an idea for a few days before it settles into something useful.

You have a full week with each Guidepost — and that week is not a deadline. It’s an invitation. Read a section. Put it down. Let it simmer. Come back to it. Try something. Notice what happens. That’s how the Guideposts work best.

If you try to rush through a lesson in one sitting, two things will happen. First, you will get overwhelmed — there is simply too much there for one sitting. Second, and more importantly, you will miss the point. These lessons are not designed to be consumed. They are designed to be lived.

So take your time. The river isn’t going anywhere.

And one more thing worth knowing before you begin:

This is your first time through the cycle — not your last.

The Guideposts are designed to be revisited. In fact, they’re designed to be cycled through again and again — which is precisely why the weekly Navigational Nudges rotate through all fourteen on a continuous loop. One time through and you’ll get your toes wet. A second time through and you’ll recognize things you missed. A third time and you’ll wonder how you ever missed them at all.

Each cycle brings new connections, new insights, and new applications you couldn’t have seen before — because you weren’t the same person before. The river looks different depending on where you’re standing.

So don’t worry about getting it all the first time. You won’t. Nobody does. That’s not a flaw in the design — it’s the design.

Just begin. The rest will follow.

ALSO IMPORTANT: Your companion journal! You will want this from Day One. Download it, print it, and put it in a binder. You will use it throughout all fourteen weeks. You will find its PDF download located in the ‘Course Resources’ section located at the bottom of this page.

So with all that cleared up, welcome aboard… let’s begin… simply follow the links below.

Week 1 – Guidepost One: The Power of Cause and Effect

This week we wade into Guidepost One — the Power of Cause and Effect. It's the anchor of everything that follows, and once you start seeing the world through its lens, you'll never quite see it the same way again. You'll begin to see problems in a new light, anticipate what might happen, and thoughtfully influence the world around you — making those quick-fix, band-aid solutions completely unnecessary.

Week 2 – Guidepost Two: The Power of Definition and Belief

This week we will explore how our definitions and beliefs shape both perceptions and actions; as well as how small tweaks in definitions can radically change our outlook and choices. We will attempt to spot limiting beliefs and explore ways to gently redefine them to better support how you want to navigate life.

Week 3 – Guidepost Three: The Power of Reflection

This week we will explore how Reflection helps us notice what people’s words and actions reveal about their beliefs—and what our own actions reveal about ours. We will practice pausing before reacting, spotting assumptions, and examining both our own and others’ belief systems to gain clarity, perspective, and understanding. We will also play a powerful new game: “They live in a world…”

Week 4 – Guidepost Four: The Power of Focus and Attention

What you pay attention to shapes your experience. Learn to direct attention deliberately, expand mental clarity, and let your mind wander when helpful—so you notice what matters instead of only the negatives.

Week 5 – Guidepost Five: The Power of Strategy

Most people think strategy is merely about to-do lists or plans. But, it’s much more. It’s about how your mind works: balancing creativity, discipline, and follow-through. In this lesson, you’ll meet the parts of your mind that make strategy possible and learn how to get them working together so your ideas actually take flight.

Week 6 – Guidepost Six: The Power of Vacuum

In this lesson, we dive into the art of navigating your goals and your time. You’ll explore what it means to live backwards in time like Merlin, uncover exactly how you’re spending your days with a Time Audit, and learn how to MASTER your goals so they actually work. You’ll see how to prioritize what truly matters, schedule effectively without feeling trapped, and put a few foundations under those castles in the air. With exercises, reflections, and practical tools, this lesson gives you a clear path to live intentionally—rather than letting life fill up with other people’s sand.

Week 7 – Guidepost Seven: The Power of Process and Growth

This week we dive into Process and Growth, including why process matters, how tipping points sneak up on you, and why our brain’s natural negative bias can slow progress. We’ll discuss problem solving, delegating, boundary setting, truth detecting, image modifying, and procrastination busting—not to fix everything at once, but to pick one challenge at a time, give it one week’s strict attention, and leave all the others to their ordinary chance. By the end, you’ll have a practical set of tools to stretch your comfort zone, test your assumptions, and watch small wins turn into real growth.

Week 8 – Guidepost Eight: The Power of Responsibility

In this lesson, we explore the heart of Personal Responsibility—how to recognize where our attention and energy truly matter, distinguish between what we can influence versus what we cannot, and make choices that reflect our values rather than reacting to circumstance. Through stories, reflections, and practical exercises, you’ll learn to spot limiting thoughts in yourself and others, shift from wishful to productive thinking, and strengthen your ability to act intentionally. By the end, you’ll understand not just the theory of responsibility, but how to apply it in daily life, from small habits to meaningful promises.

Week 9 – Guidepost Nine: The Power of Contribution and Compensation

So often, we approach life expecting a “transaction,” I do this, I get that. We think effort should automatically produce reward, fairness should automatically balance out, and chance is either cruel or kind. Life’s real Compensation comes through your contributions—through how you engage, what you notice, and what you take from each experience—rather than through rigid expectations. Outcomes don’t announce themselves as rewards—they always return, but often in a language you’re not expecting. This lesson attempts to teach that language, helping students see patterns, make wiser choices, and avoid frustration when life doesn’t “play fair.”

Week 10 – Guidepost Ten: The Power of Attraction

In Guidepost Ten: The Power of Attraction, we’ll explore why you feel instantly comfortable with some people, inexplicably irritated by others, and deeply energized—or drained—by certain social environments. We’ll delve into why we naturally gravitate toward people who mirror us, how opposites can attract when curiosity and respect exist, and how social patterns reflect both your strengths and growth edges. Along the way, you’ll gain practical tools to recognize these patterns in yourself and others, understand different temperaments, and make choices that help you navigate your life.

Week 11 – Guidepost Eleven: The Power of Entropy

In this lesson, we explore the force of Entropy and how it quietly shapes your life. You’ll discover why everything—your body, emotions, mind, spirit, environment, finances, community, and relationships—requires ongoing attention, or it will naturally drift toward disorder. We’ll look at the signs of decay, the forces that keep systems moving, and the subtle ways small, consistent actions can nourish your most important life assets. Through stories, reflections, and practical guidance, you’ll learn to notice what’s been neglected, invest wisely in what matters, and allow the energy you give in one area to ripple into others. This is a lesson about awareness, maintenance, and growth, equipping you to navigate life’s currents with insight, care, and resilience.

Week 12 – Guidepost Twelve: The Power of Communication and Understanding

In this lesson, we will examine the six elements of effective listening: Intent, Body Language, Emotional Tone, Reflection, Denotative vs. Connotative Meaning, and Confirm Before Reacting. We’ll discover how to notice what people are really communicating, pay attention to emotions beneath the words, and practice responding in ways that are thoughtful and measured. Through simple exercises, we will observe, reflect, and check for understanding in real conversations or even in media we consume. By the end, we will have a clearer sense of how communication works and practical ways to engage without overreacting, misinterpreting, or losing perspective.

Week 13 – Guidepost Thirteen: The Power of Influence and Persuasion

Most of us were never taught how persuasion really works. We were taught to argue harder, explain better, or repeat ourselves louder — and then we wonder why people dig in instead of opening up. In this lesson, we’ll slow down and look at what actually motivates human behavior, why certain approaches damage trust, and how influence can be practiced ethically and effectively. Along the way, you’ll encounter practical tools you can use immediately — from asking questions that open minds, to identifying motivations, to aligning your ideas with what others truly value. The goal isn’t to help you control outcomes — it’s to help you understand people well enough that your ideas get a fair hearing.

Week 14 – Guidepost Fourteen: The Power of Indirect Effort

In this final lesson, we explore the power of Indirect Effort — the quiet force behind the most lasting changes in our lives and relationships. We’ll discover what a fulcrum is, why finding the right one matters far more than applying more force, and how five common fulcrums operate in human systems every day. Along the way, we’ll meet a river rat named Homer, a woman named Dulcinea, and a wise man named Don Quixote — and we’ll learn why context may be the most transformative gift we can offer another human being.
