A Whackadoodle musical story with a Point
If you have never listened to this story, you might what to listen today. If you do know the story, you might want to share with it someone who needs it. It has a really good point. Pun intended.
If you have already heard this musical story created by Harry Nilsson, it will make you smile in remembrance. If you haven’t, it might be a good way to wait for the bus, or something to listen to while making dinner? I hope you see the point.
I actually had my after school Palama Drama kids perform this entire story. We created “point-idioms props” for weeks in preparation. (Point of origin. Destination point. Point of no return. What is your point? Point of view. You get the idea). You should have seen them dance to the music. Lot’s of mistakes along with lots of laughter.
Oh dear. I can see already I have to help you listen to the story in order, because AI isn’t as smart as I am, at least not yet. I think you can access most of the story in order with this link, but if not, let me take you through them one at a time.
It begins with a musical introduction. (Skip the ads as soon as you can, and imagine all my kid actors entering into the Town of Point). Then the narrator has something to say about the land of point.
Oblio soon learns that his best and only friend is his dog Arrow.
Next, we come to the national game of triangle toss. It ends in a technical tie. Some kid complains. (My Palama Dram kids actually got really good at triangle toss. The “points on their head” were those silly hats you buy for New Year’s Eve. The triangles were made out of pipe cleaners.)
I think this link to Oblio’s banishment to the pointless forest explains what happens next.
While pointless Obio is walking through the pointless forest, we get a really nice song. Think about your troubles.
Oblio and Arrow enter the pointless forest. They meet the pointless man, a bunch of bees, and then a rock man. They have some pretty interesting conversations. Why not listen for yourself.
After their encounters, Arrow falls into a hole called the Point of No Return. We are asked to follow them down to the bottom.
They have many adventures after Arrow is recused from the hole. They meet three fat lady who who love to dance and sing. They meet a leaf-man with some advice they don’t take about to plan trees. They experience so much. Maybe you should listen to the narrator.
They even get carried off by a tridactyl. During which we get the song, “Suddenly the Strangest Things are Happening to Me.”
They even end up in the tridactyl nest, but get away, here is the narration.
They eventually fall asleep near a bolder, and we get another song. “Are you sleeping? Can you hear me?”
When they wake up, they find that they have slept under a rock which with a finger pointing to their Designation Point. Their designation point ends up being in the home where they began They are one day’s hike from the home they were banished from. They go back to their home. The narrator must tell you the rest. (My favorite part is someone in the crowd yells, “He’s got a point there.”)
Enjoy, and I hope you get the point.
